That’s why choosing your wedding photographer is about so much more than finding someone who takes beautiful pictures. Before you sign a contract, here are five things we recommend considering when choosing your wedding photographer.
Find a photography style you love. Before you start comparing packages and pricing, pay attention to the photographs themselves. Do you gravitate toward light and airy images? Rich, true-to-color photography? Editorial portraits? Candid, documentary-style moments? Your photographer’s editing and shooting style should already feel like you. Don’t hire someone hoping they’ll photograph or edit your wedding differently than what’s represented in their portfolio.
Look at an entire wedding gallery. Instagram shows you the highlights. A full wedding gallery shows you the whole story. Ask to see at least one complete gallery so you can get a better idea of how they capture getting ready, ceremony moments, family portraits, reception details, low-light environments, dancing, and everything in between.
Make sure you actually like them! This one matters more than couples sometimes realize. Your photographer will be with you during some of the most emotional and intimate moments of your wedding day. You want someone who makes you feel comfortable, understands your personalities, and can confidently guide you when necessary. Beautiful photography matters, but so does the person behind the camera.
Understand what’s included. Before comparing photographers based on price alone, make sure you’re comparing similar services. How many hours of coverage are included? Is there a second photographer? An engagement session? Albums or prints? Travel fees? What happens if you need additional coverage? The least expensive package isn’t necessarily the best value, and the most expensive isn’t automatically the right fit.
Ask about their wedding day approach. Some photographers are highly involved in posing and directing, while others prefer to quietly document the day as it unfolds. Ask how they approach timelines, family portraits, first looks, unexpected weather, difficult lighting, and those inevitable moments when the wedding day doesn’t go exactly according to plan.
